The Jaisalmer Checklist I Wish I Had Before Booking a Desert Camp

-

I booked my Jaisalmer desert camp from a search results page two weeks before arriving, going largely on photographs and star ratings. It worked out fine in the end, but only because I got lucky on a few details that I had overlooked previously.

My itinerary and understanding broadened after speaking to other travellers whose experiences were nowhere near what was being advertised in the photos. Subsequently, I put together a checklist I wish someone had handed me first.

Understand the Geography of Sam and Khuri

Most desert camps marketed for Jaisalmer sit in one of two areas: Sam Sand Dunes or Khuri. Sam is closer to the more dramatic, taller dunes and is the more commercially developed of the two, with a significant concentration of camps competing for the same stretch of sand. Khuri is quieter, further south, and tends to attract camps that lean into a more authentic village experience alongside the desert activities.

Sam is approximately 40 kilometres from Jaisalmer town, and Khuri is approximately 50 kilometres in the opposite direction. Knowing which area a camp is located in is important because listings are not always precise about this, and the difference in atmosphere between the two areas is considerable. If a listing does not clearly state Sam or Khuri, ask directly before booking.

Check How Far the Camp Actually Is From the Dunes

This is the detail that most people miss out on. Several camps advertise a desert experience while sitting a noticeable distance from the dunes themselves, requiring a jeep transfer to reach the sand for the sunset and camel ride portion of the evening. That is not necessarily a problem, but it changes the nature of the experience considerably from a camp where you can walk out of your tent directly onto the dunes.

Ask specifically whether the camp’s tents are on the dunes or near them, and how the transfer to the sunset point works if it is required. Photographs in listings are often taken at the dunes rather than at the actual accommodation, which can be misleading if you do not ask the direct question.

What the Camel Safari Actually Involves

The camel safari to the dunes for sunset is the centrepiece of most camp packages, and the experience can range from a short, perfunctory ride of fifteen minutes to a more substantial outing that includes time at the dunes to walk around and watch the sunset properly before heading back. Confirm the duration and structure of the safari before booking, including whether it is a private ride or shared with other guests on the same circuit.

There is often competition among several camel and jeep groups at the same spot as they attempt to watch the sunset over the dunes at Sam. This can reduce the feeling of wilderness that made you go into the desert in the first place. Whereas Khuri is generally less crowded because it attracts fewer large tour companies.

Booking Logistics and Timing

Hotel room booking and direct camp bookings are both available around Jaisalmer, and prices and inclusions vary considerably between the two. Booking directly with the camp, where possible, often makes it easier to ask the specific questions above and get a clear answer rather than relying on a generic listing description. Calling ahead, even briefly, tends to surface more accurate information than the listing text alone.

The period from October to March is the peak time for desert camps to operate. They fill very quickly on weekends, since many visitors are travelling from Jaisalmer Town, where they will stay only one night in the desert.

Booking at least a week ahead during peak season is sensible, and earlier still around the Desert Festival in February, when Jaisalmer sees a significant spike in visitor numbers.

A Final Note on Expectations

A desert camp near Jaisalmer is not going to offer untouched wilderness. This is a well-established part of the regional tourism circuit, and managing your expectations around that reality before you arrive makes for a considerably better evening than discovering it on the spot. The dunes are still genuinely beautiful, the sunset is still worth the trip, and a good camp with the right group size and an honest description of its location can deliver an evening that lives up to what you came for. It just requires asking the right questions first.
