Places to Visit in Gangtok
Tsomgo Lake
Tsomgo Lake is a magical place that seems to change with the seasons. Located just 40 kilometres from Gangtok, this oval-shaped lake sits at an impressive height of 12,400 feet. In winter, the lake turns into a frozen wonderland, while in summer, the area comes alive with colourful rhododendrons blooming around the clear waters. Visiting Tsomgo Lake is a special experience, and if you want to make it even more memorable, you can take a yak ride around the lake. It’s a bit bumpy and can be a little scary, but it’s worth it for the adventure and the views. For a comfortable stay, you can find several hotels in Gangtok, including Treebo Hotels, which offer a comfortable place to relax after a day of exploring this beautiful region.
Banjhakri Falls
If you need a rest from mountain adventures, Banjhakri Falls is a great place to chill. The waterfall is beautiful, and it is set within an energy park of exotic trees and flowers that respects the Shaman traditions of the area. Throughout the park, you’ll spot sculptures depicting the story of the Banjhakri or forest shaman, which makes for a lovely experience of culture while getting in touch with nature. This is a perfect place to pack a picnic, take a dip in the lower pools, and recharge your batteries before your next Sikkim adventure.
Places to Visit in Pelling
Rabdentse Ruins
The old stones at Rabdentse tell a story that will never be captured in your history text. Once the royal capital of Sikkim’s second kingdom, the ruins remain, standing quietly on a hill ridge with stunning views across the Kanchenjunga range. Walking around the remnants of the royal court, the monastery sites and stupas will take you back to the 17th century. The Archaeological Survey of India has done an impressive job in preserving these eroding relics. If you arrive early in the morning, you will be able to enjoy the mountain backdrop as the view is typically best, plus you won’t have to deal with the crowds!
Pemayangtse Monastery
This 300-year-old monastery is a representation of rich Sikkim spirituality. At 2,085 metres, it’s home to some of the most elaborate Buddhist art you’ll ever see. At the drive-through, one of the three floors of a wooden structure, there are religious texts, sculptures, and paintings hundreds of years old. The jewel of the monastery must be the wooden replica of Guru Rinpoche’s celestial home, built artistically without a single nail. When monks perform ceremonies in the colourful robes set against snow-capped peaks, it’s easy to understand how this place is considered one of Sikkim’s holiest sites.

Kanchenjunga Falls
Ever been at the base of a waterfall so impressive that your heart skipped a bit? That is Kanchenjunga Falls. An hour from Pelling town, the waterfall is quite an impressive sight as it crashes down from a significant height, creating a misty spectacle. There are winding roads through the forest that give way to a roaring beauty. The rainforest is exclusively magical in the monsoon season. The viewing platform allows you to get close enough to feel the tiny sprays of water droplets on your face. Make sure to carry a raincoat while visiting during the monsoon season and stay at well-known accommodations like Treebo Hotels to avoid any last-minute check-in issues.
Khecheopalri Lake
Located amidst a dense forest, 27 kms away from Pelling, this lake is shaped like a footprint and is sacred to both Buddhists and Hindus. They call it a “Wish-Fulfilling Lake” for a good reason. Ever seen a lake where the leaves aren’t allowed to settle on the surface? The locals believe the birds that live around Khecheopalri Lake frequently remove any leaf that falls on the lake. Prayer flags encircle the lake, where the high-altitude, pure, and clear water beautifully reflects the surrounding hills. The surface acts like a mirror, allowing you to see every tree, hill, and bird in crisp, vivid detail. And, there is a temple by the lakeside, and a few devotees offering their prayers.

Places to Visit in Lachung
Yumthang Valley
Visiting this place will make you feel as though you were standing in a painting. It’s Yumthang Valley. Located at an incredible 3,500 metres above sea level, it has often been dubbed ‘Valley of Flowers’. In spring, the whole valley is full of rhododendrons, primulas, poppies, and other flowers growing wild. It’s more than picturesque; it’s absolutely enchanting. The Yumthang River flows through the crystal-clear valley and is overshadowed by surrounding snow-capped mountains.
Zero Point (Yumesamdong)
Just 23 kms beyond Yumthang is Zero Point. This is where human civilisation ends and nature starts. At 15,300 feet above sea level, the air is thin up here, and you might find breathing a bit difficult, but the views are mesmerising. This is the last stop before the border, and you will need a special permit to go there. Three rivers come together, creating a wonderful landscape. In winter, the landscape is blanketed in thick snow, with the sun daring to peek through from time to time for some sunlight. In summer, those patches of snow cling to the mountain tops like a child holding on to its parent.
